Mumbai: BMC collects over INR 76 crore in fines from those flouting COVID-19 norms

As per today’s data, there are total zero containment zones in the city and 46 buildings have been sealed. It has also come to light that recovery rate of Mumbai district has increased to 97 per cent.

According to latest figure revealed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the civic body has collected over INR 76 crores in fines till October 19, 2021, from people flouting COVID-19 protocols in public places amid the pandemic.

The BMC has collected a fine of INR 76,71,84,000 from people for not wearing masks, which is inclusive of the fines collected by the Mumbai Police and Railways.

Of the total, civic body has collected INR 63,65,96,200, while the Mumbai Police has coughed up INR 12,55,48,600 in fines from people who were found without face masks in public places.

In addition, violators on the three railway lines — Western, Harbour and Central — has collected fines worth INR 50,39,200.

Out of the six zones in Mumbai, Zone 4, which include BMC’s wards P and R, has seen a large number of violators. The BMC has collected the highest amount of fine of INR 10,95,70,400 followed by Zone 2 with a fine of INR 10,23,43,700.

Meanwhile, Mumbai reported 313 new COVID-19 cases on October 19, Tuesday, taking the total tally to 7,51,491.

Days after reporting zero COVID-19 deaths, the city recorded 4 deaths due to coronavirus on Monday and Tuesday, which pushed its fatality count to 16,188.
