Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is reportedly constructing five underground water silos at dangerous spots across the city in order to avoid the flooding that usually happens during the monsoon.
According to reports, two chronic waterlogging spots have been identified for the pilot project currently under construction: One at Hindmata Junction in Dadar (East) and the other at Gandhi Market near Matunga, both on Babasaheb Ambedkar (BA) road.
Every year during the monsoons, both spots get inundated. Moreover, the road is one of the main connectors of the eastern suburbs to the island city.
Earlier on Sunday, May 23, Shiv Sena leader Aaditya Thackeray inspected the developmental work of the underground tanks that are being constructed at Pramod Mahajan Udyan, Hindmata Flyover, St. Xavier's Ground.
During heavy rainfall in the monsoons, a large amount of water is stored in this area and it does not drain quickly due to which Mumbai’s civic body, the BMC is constructing underground tanks. According to sources, these large underground tanks will help store extra rainwater for at least three hours during the rainy season. It will be especially useful during periods of heavy rainfall as well as high tide and will help in solving the problem of stagnant water.
Moreover, the stored water will be released into the sea after the tide recedes. This will prevent water retention in the area. Furthermore, such projects can be set up in areas of Mumbai where water is accumulated during torrential rains, asserted Guardian Minister Aaditya Thackeray.
