The water content in the lakes that supply water to the city of Mumbai is reportedly on a decline. On Thursday, May 20, it was 18 per cent or about 248,000 million litres.
According to sources, this water supply is sufficient for 65 days, till July 25. If the monsoons do not arrive on time in June, Mumbai is likely to face a water shortage.
The city receives 3,850 million litres of water daily from seven dams namely Modaksagar, Tansa, Madhya Vaitarna, Upper Vaitarna, Bhatsa, Vihar and Tulshi. Moreover, the citizens of Mumbai need at least 14,47,000 million litres of water every day in order to quench their thirst. Heavy rains last year left adequate stocks in the ponds. However, as the stocks are declining, the pressure on Mumbai's civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is increasing.
Rainfall forecast in June:
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted a good start to the rains in June. If the water level is in good condition by June 30, the people of Mumbai will not face a water shortage. However, if the water level in the lake does not rise satisfactorily despite the rains, citizens living across the city may have to face water cuts.
May water storage in three years (in million litres):
2021: 2,61,978 (18.10 per cent)
2020: 3,14,423 (21.72 per cent)
2019: 1,88,713 (13.04 per cent)
On the other hand, earlier the water supply was affected in Wadala due to the gusty winds of Cyclone Tauktae. In addition, a large tree collapsed due to a storm in the CGS Colony area of Wadala in Mumbai which caused great damage to the water pipeline.
