Several fire incidents have been reported across areas of Mumbai, over the last year. BMC along with the respective departments has ensured immediate rescue operations. However, officials believe that several simple initiatives would help create awareness in such situations. With an aim to emphasise more, the Mumbai Fire Brigade has decided to conduct training programs for the corporators in Mumbai.

As per reports, all the 227 corporators will be a part of the initiative where they will be given information about fire safety and other related aspects. One will learn about the challenges and methods to douse the fire or tackle the situation, and officials believe, this will help them educate the citizens further. Officials at the BMC wants the corporators to share the message with the people and prepare outreach plans through volunteers, residents and party members

The aim of the training programs is to ensure one can take action quickly and more lives can be saved in case of an incident. Officials will also revise the methodology to gather information and other policies, which can be simplified, after which one will be able to check the same online. The teams will also select public representatives for the programs and they will be taught about the protocols and fire hazards, in order to handle the same in their areas and also spread information on a regular basis.

The programs will include simple procedures like vacating a building, understanding the importance of exit gates and ways, sign representations, floor plan etc. which are regularly used and suggested as mandatory requirements by the fire safety teams. BMC has been given the plan regarding the same, and once approved, officials will be able to take actions, where owners may have to change their plans to create exit doors and pathways if needed at the premises

Often citizens do not have the necessary information to handle the crisis at a basic level, and these programs will educate them to ensure safety. Elected public representatives will be given the task to spread this information in their respective areas, depending on the infrastructure and geography. Some areas in Mumbai are narrow and do not have the necessary fire safety equipment in place. In many cases, it becomes a tad bit difficult for the fire teams to reach on time, and during such cases, these training programs will be useful for immediate action.

As per reports, more than 120 people have died and 800 have been injured in incidents reported from different areas in Mumbai, over the last few years.
