In an attempt to increase the groundwater level in Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is digging rainwater percolation pits at civic gardens, reported the Times of India. Presently, at 70 gardens the pits have been dug, but according to an official 250 additional areas have been found where these pits will now be dug. 860 gardens in Mumbai are open to all at no cost.

Superintendent of the garden department, Jitendra Pardeshi elaborated that the pits are dug in those areas in gardens where rainwater becomes static. Apart from the construction of these pits, a board is on the site which explains to the locals the benefits of the said activity, he elaborated.

The ambassador of, “Majhi Vasundhara Abhiyaan” (state’s environment and climate change department), Subhajit Mukherjee, is also part of the initiative. He stated that the aim is to send the rainwater to the ground which won’t just help support trees, but also assist in the indirect recharge of borewells.

He also, based on the report, mentioned that the cost to dig the pit is nearly Rs 5,000. Pits at Muktanand park in Santacruz (W), Khanna garden in Khar, Dadoji Kondadev Kridangan, Kandivali (E) have been built. Before the making of the pit, a percolation test in undertaken wherein a hole is dug and filled with water. The water must percolate, if it flows, another site at the garden is sought, he said.

Additionally, citizens at the Coastal Garden at Juhu beach also created a pit over the last weekend. Pits like this are also made at Sant Ramdas grounds in Amboli, mentioned the report.
