With no hike in the property tax for the next year, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) took a jibe at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reminding the MVA government-led by Shiv Sena about its promise of tax exemption for houses measuring less than 500 sq ft.

Moreover, the Opposition party in the state also claimed that the Sena is deceiving Mumbai residents.

The city has around 1.5 lakh flats measuring 500 sq ft, and on an average, nearly INR 670 crores is collected by way of taxes from these flats. If this entire amount is waived off, the BMC would lose out on revenue, said BJP.

Taking it to Twitter, BJP leader Ashish Shelar said: “Despite facing losses during the pandemic, 50 per cent reduction in premium was given to the builders. But the same Shiv Sena failed to abide by its earlier announcement of complete exemption of INR 670 crores property tax to Mumbaikars owning 500 sq feet flats.”

The BJP also mentioned that now the BMC has thought of facing the loss after announcing no property tax hike for the residents of Mumbai city for the next one year. Further attacking the party, the BJP said that with Diwali is round the corner, Shiv Sena is making fake announcements only.
