Ahead of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corportion (BMC) elections and the code of conduct came into effect, tenders have been floated for several major infrastructure projects.

These key projects include the Gargai Dam, a cable-stayed bridge connecting the Y-bridge in Byculla to the JJ Bridge, and the fourth phase of the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR). The total investment for all these projects is approximately ₹10,000 crore.

Gargai Dam

A tender has been floated for this project in Palghar district. Gargai Dam project, which was stalled for years, is now moving ahead. Once completed, this project, costing approximately ₹3,040 crore, will provide Mumbai with an additional 450 million liters of water daily. The Middle Vaitarna Dam was completed in 2014.

Traffic congestion to be reduced

1. Cable-Stayed Flyover:

Last week, the BMC awarded a ₹1,041 crore contract to a joint venture of Ashoka Buildcon for the construction of a cable-stayed bridge connecting the Y-bridge in Byculla to the JJ Bridge. The bridge is expected to be completed in two years.

This approximately 850-meter-long bridge will reduce traffic congestion in the Byculla and Mazgaon areas. It will also ease the burden on the Eastern Express Highway and connect the eastern suburbs to South Mumbai.

With two ramps connecting to the Oliphant Bridge, this bridge will provide direct access to the Eastern Freeway and the MTHL.

2. Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR):

The BMC has invited tenders for the fourth phase of the GMLR, from Mulund to the Airoli toll plaza, at a cost of ₹1,293 crore. This 12.2 km long route will connect the Western Express Highway at Goregaon to the Eastern Express Highway at Mulund. This will reduce the current 75-minute journey to just 25 minutes.

The project, which will be implemented in four phases, has a total cost of ₹14,000 crore.

3. Asphalting of Eastern and Western Express Highways

The BMC has undertaken the resurfacing of the Eastern and Western Express Highways, at a cost of ₹120 crore.

Service-Based Waste Management Contract:

After nearly eight months since the tenders were floated, the BMC has finalized a service-based waste management contract worth ₹4,000 crore. Under this agreement, sanitation and waste transportation work in 21 wards will be carried out by private agencies.

The civic body has clarified that the rates, which were initially 30 to 60 percent higher than the estimated cost, were reduced to 14 to 16 percent through negotiations.
