After the Elphinstone bridge stampede, BMC has decided to evict all the hawkers who congest roads near railway stations. They have started a hawkers eviction drive on all railway stations in the city.

A major hawkers eviction drive took place in Andheri West – part of the city which is considered as one of the busiest areas of Mumbai as it gets a major footfall owing to its commercial status. However, there are many areas in Andheri which are congested and pose problems for pedestrians to walk on the road.

In order to decongest the Andheri West railway station premises, the BMC undertook a demolition drive in Masjid Galli, as reported in Mumbai Mirror.

As part of the demolition drive, around 10 shops and 70 shop extensions have been demolished. BMC is planning to use the free space for an autorickshaw stand.

Masjid Galli which is also known as Chappals Galli is a home to a lot of hawkers and footwear selling shops. After the Elphinstone stampede incident, the civic body started evicting hawkers outside all railway stations in the city.
