Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to finalize a design to conserve the Parsi Gate at Marine Drive.

BMC has also submitted the proposal to the Bombay Parsi Panchayat for approval. Moreover, it has proposed two viable options. One, either to relocate the monument towards the south side (near Al-Sabah Court building) of the Marine Drive stretch, or shift it temporarily for two years till the completion of the Mumbai Coastal Road tunnelling work and later fix it at its existing location, opposite Taraporewala Aquarium, but over 20m towards the sea as the existing promenade will be taken over for the tunnelling work, as per reports.

On the other hand, several people from the Parsi community had earlier initiated an online campaign in order to protest regarding the same. Moreover, the petition requested CM Uddhav Thackeray to rethink the Mumbai Coastal Road Project and plan it differently. It also asked the CM to conserve the Parsi Gate at the same location with access to the sea for worship and offerings.

The Parsi community in Mumbai has been central to the city’s rich heritage. From Jamsetji Tata to Freddie Mercury, the Parsi community has been shaping the course of India and the world for centuries.
