The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has finally began its initiative to crackdown the shops and its owners without Marathi signboard from Monday, October 10.

In this regards, the civic body has issued notices to 522 shops and establishments for violating provisions of the Maharashtra Shops and Establishments (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) Act, 2017.

According to reports, the BMC officials visited as many as 2,158 establishments across the city this week. Moreover, it has come to light that the out of the total establishments visited, nearly 1600 shops had boards in Marathi. However, in the remaining shops where no Marathi nameplate was found, notices were given per the relevant rules and procedures.

The BMC had given abundant time for compliance, but the shop and establishment department found that establishments were not complying with the amendment, officials stated.

As per recent guidelines, every shop is being given seven days after the date of notice issuance for setting up the new signboard. If they fail to do so during that time, the BMC will file a case in the court against the owners of the establishments.

The present provision states a fine of INR 2,000 per staffer will be imposed on shops. If the shop owners choose to pay the fine on their own, then the BMC may not approach the court, officials added.

At present, there are more than five lakh shops and commercial establishments in Mumbai and only less than 50 per cent of these have Marathi signboards. They will take photographs of the shops as evidence as we send them notices.
