The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has widened Mahatma Phule Road to 90 feet by demolishing 326 slums. This road connects Gorai beach and the famous pagoda. The work of this road will be completed soon. With this, the ride to Gorai beach will be soon without any hindrance or hassle.

The civic body will open the new tarred road for traffic by next week, said an official from R Central division.

“The walls on both sides of the road will be painted. Proper lighting arrangements will also be done. BMC has earmarked ₹ 1.5 crore for these facilities,” the official said.

The administrative official said the road was 40 feet wide and got narrowed due to encroachment. This resulted in difficult to commute for tourists and fire brigades in case of emergency. A similar incident took place recently where the MFB faced difficulties in extinguishing the fire that broke out at Shree Complex CHS and Royal Palace CHS.

There were also problems of water logging. But now buses can also ply on this road leading to the beach and the pagoda, the official added.

Assistant Commissioner Sandhya Nandedkar said: "Now a 90 feet wide road has been constructed in 6,000 to 7,000 square meters. We are going to beautify the wall with MLA funds. About 600 meters of road space was cleared after 326 huts were removed. It is a Gorai entry point so it will be beautified with street lights and benches."

The administrative officer said that out of 326 families, 133 families have been resettled in a building owned by the municipality on Pandit Mallarao Kulkarni Road. The rest of the huts are illegal, but their hearings are ongoing.
