Now, narrow roads and alleys will soon be litter-free across Mumbai as e-auto rickshaws will be plying for door-to-door garbage collection in the slums.

Due to the use of 'e auto rickshaw', garbage collection becomes easy and this option is also convenient for transportation.

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner and Administrator Dr. Iqbal Singh Chahal and Additional Commissioner (Western Suburbs) Dr Sudhakar Shinde gave instructions to implement the pilot project of 'E Auto Rickshaw' in accordance with cleanliness in the slum areas.

Each e-rickshaw costs INR 5 lakhs and can collect 450 kg of garbage. After studying the needs of the locality, M East Ward has prepared a schedule from which areas and when the e-rickshaws will pick up garbage. The contractor will be responsible for the maintenance of the rickshaw and will employ the driver. BMC uses small closed vehicles, compactors and bulk compactors to collect garbage.

The municipality has formulated 'Vision 2030' to improve waste management in the city. The draft will serve as an action plan for the next 10 years to make Mumbai the cleanest global city. Accordingly, the civic system is using various methods for waste disposal.

For the first time, instructions were given to introduce the use of 'e auto rickshaws' in the densely and densely populated 'M East' division. Chief Engineer (Solid Waste Management) Prashant Tayshete informed that as this pilot project is getting good response from the citizens, such type of vehicles will be used in more areas in the coming time. He also said that soon 'E Auto Rickshaw' will be used in D section as well.

'E Auto Rickshaw' is being used in Govandi, Shivaji Nagar and Chita Camp areas. In the slums and densely populated areas, there were many obstacles to be faced in transporting vehicles like large jeeps as well as to navigate through the traffic jams. That is why the concept of using small sized e-auto rickshaws to reach the alleys was suggested. Accordingly, three e-auto rickshaws are currently being used in the 'M East' section.
