On July 7, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had given the permission to people living in Mumbai wherein if anyone has the symptoms of coronavirus and wants to get themselves tested, that can be done without a doctors prescription. This decision was taken after a letter was received from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
The BMC in a press release had given a list of 17 laboratories where Mumbaikars can get themselves tested for coronavirus without a prescription. It also stated that if one's result comes out as positive they will have to stay in the quarantine centre of their respective ward, where they will be treated. After the quarantine, once again the test will be conducted and if the results are negative the person will be discharged. The prices for the tests are fixed at ₹2,500 if an individual goes to the laboratory and ₹2,800 if the laboratory staff goes to an individual's house to conduct the test.
The BMC believes that the earlier the tests are conducted the better it will be in terms of treating positive cases and also identifying the suspected cases.
According to a report in The Times of India, the BMC commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal said, "This is the most liberal COVID-19 testing policy anywhere in India to be implemented by BMC with immediate effect."
