COVID-19: BMC issues global bid to acquire 1 crore vaccine doses

BMC's move comes after Maharashtra Minister Aaditya Thackeray on Monday, May 10, said the municipal body will explore possibilities of global procurement of vaccines to meet the inoculation demand.

On Wednesday, May 12, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) issued a global bid to procure one crore COVID-19 vaccine doses to inoculate citizens in Mumbai at the earliest in order to Break the Chain.

The city civic body is making all efforts to get the Mumbaikars vaccinated as they prepare for the third wave of the virus.

BMC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal, in a statement released, said: “As per consent given by the Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray to MCGM, the municipal body has issued global bid today to acquire 1 crore COVID vaccines to vaccinate the citizens of Mumbai at the earliest possible on a massive scale in its decisive fight against the virus.”

“MCGM has resolved to make every possible effort in future also to acquire sufficient quantity of COVID-19 vaccines to vaccinate all eligible citizens of Mumbai on a war footing in the next 60-90 days,” added Chahal.

BMC's move comes after Maharashtra Minister Aaditya Thackeray on Monday, May 10, said the municipal body will explore possibilities of global procurement of vaccines to meet the inoculation demand.

Meanwhile, Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar on Monday, May 10, announced that the BMC will issue global tenders to procure around five million COVID-19 vaccines. She also mentioned that the tenders would be floated in two days and the doses procured shall be used to administer free jabs to all Mumbaikars.
