Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to tighten the rules with regards to containment zones in sealed buildings across the city in view of the rising number of cases of coronavirus.

Moreover, the BMC plans to increase testing per day to 16,000-18,000 tests. The current target with regards to testing happens to be 15,000 tests daily. Municipal commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal authorized fresh directives in a review meeting with all assistant commissioners, zonal deputy municipal commissioners, deans of municipal hospitals and officers of the civic body's public health department, on Wednesday, September 30, regarding the same.

As per the new rules, all residential buildings will now have to screen help and other employees who have access to housing societies such as drivers, sweepers, domestic security personnel. While retaining the current rule of sealing an entire building only if there are cases on two or more floors, or if there are more than 10 cases, BMC will ensure no one exits or enters the building if it has been sealed.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, September 30, Mumbai reported 2,654 fresh cases of the coronavirus taking the COVID-19 tally in the city to 2,05,142 cases. Earlier on Wednesday, the state government had extended the lockdown in Maharashtra until October 31 besides easing the restrictions as part of the Mission Begin Again initiative. In the fifth phase of the unlock, the state government has permitted hotels, restaurants, food courts and bars to resume the dine-in services from October 5 with a maximum of 50 per cent capacity. Meanwhile, all trains originating and ending their journey within the state shall be restarted with immediate effect.
