The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced a cleanliness competition on Tuesday, March 17, which will involve the general public and various establishments.

The "Mumbai Clean League" is the brainchild of actor Akshay Kumar, who said the idea was inspired by the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The cleanliness competition is aimed at boosting civic participation and improve Mumbai’s ranking in Swachh Bharat Mission. 

The initiative is expected to create healthy competition among different areas of the city while promoting civic responsibility among citizens.

At a press conference held at the BMC headquarters, Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani announced the "Mumbai Clean League" competition in the presence of Akshay Kumar, Deputy Mayor Sanjay Ghadi, Standing Committee Chairman Prabhakar Shinde, and BJP leader Ameet Satam.

BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani said that the competition will be held in every ward and local officials, NGOs, residential societies etc will be contacted to come forward and participate.

Competition Categories:

The competition will feature multiple award categories.

These include:

  • Clean administrative divisions (corporator group and ward level)
  • Clean residential complexes
  • Clean slum areas
  • Clean commercial establishments
  • Clean hospitals (government and private)
  • Clean restaurants
  • Clean community toilets
  • Clean gardens and open spaces
  • Clean roads and streets and
  • Clean market areas

Prize for winners

Prize money will range from Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 25 lakh, with the highest award earmarked for the cleanest ward, aimed at incentivising broad-based participation.

Winners in various categories will receive awards and may also be considered for concessions on property tax. The solid waste management department will oversee the entire process.

Competition and Participation

The competition has begun immediately and will run until December. It is open to a wide range of participants, including housing societies, schools, slum areas, hotels, gardens, public toilets and other establishments in Mumbai.

According to Gagrani, each participant will receive a QR code for monitoring and evaluation. The process will be transparent, with assessments being carried out by a Central government body.
