The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will install four borewells in Mumbai to collect rainwater and use recycled water for public purposes. This will improve water conservation and raise the underground water level in the city.

The civic body has issued a tender for the pilot project. All the properties selected for borewells belong to the BMC. The project will cost INR 28.3 lakh and take around three months to complete.

The four borewells will be built at:

- Baptista Road Market

- Cresto Mukund House

- BEST Depot

- Fire Brigade (SV Road)

The new system will collect rainwater through pits instead of letting it flow into drains and streams. This water will be stored in wells for later use. As the water moves through the soil, minerals and oxidants will be restored naturally.

The project will involve digging natural slopes and wells that are 2 to 3 metres deep. These wells will be linked by pipelines. The water from surrounding areas will flow through the pipes and slopes into the pits.

The pits will be cleaned regularly to prevent blockage from sediments. Before starting the digging work, contractors must test the soil. This test must be done by qualified geologists.

The pits will be filled with sand, pebbles, and gravel. These materials will act as filters to stop contamination while the water flows underground. The plan is to recycle a large amount of rainwater over time.

The strike affected many businesses and government departments. Mumbai needs about 4,200 million litres of water each day. But the city gets only 3,850 million litres from its seven lakes. The remaining 400 million litres are supplied by private tankers.

The decision to drill borewells comes after a strike by the Mumbai Water Tankers Association (MWTA). The strike was held in protest against the new rules by the Central Ground Water Authority (CGWA).
