The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) recently reinitiated its drive to ban plastic and thermocol. However, it has also proposed to provide eco-friendly plastic containers to 3,741 women fishmongers. Similar to the plastic container, these eco-friendly containers last long and can carry up to 20 kgs of fish.

This proposal has been initiated and a provision of ₹3.74 crores will be made for the same. The proposal will be tabled in the Standing Committee on Wednesday, March 4.  As stated in the Hindustan Times, the women fishmongers will receive ₹10,000 to buy three containers that have a capacity of 50, 60, and 70 litres. The money will be transferred directly into the accounts of the eligible beneficiaries. To avail this benefit, fisherwomen will have to submit all valid documents to prove their income is below ₹1 lakh.

On February 29, the BMC announced that it aims to make Mumbai single-use plastic-free by May 1, 2020. It has been conducting plastic drives at several shops since then and on Tuesday, March 3,  seized nearly 410 kg of plastic from shopkeepers and traders in the city and imposed a fine of ₹6.60 lakh on them.

In the past few weeks, there has been a fresh vigour in the civic authority to reduce the dependency on plastic. There are also now trying to adopt more environment-friendly ways in other areas too. One such incident that was recently announced was the usage of eco-friendly concrete in the construction of the Coastal Road Project. It is said that this method will be used particularly in areas that have marine life. This eco-friendly concrete is a mixture that uses less cement and thus is less harmful to the flora and fauna.

For those unaware, the Coastal Road is a proposed project which will consist of 8-lane, 29.2-km long freeway that would run along Mumbai's western coastline connecting Marine Lines in the south to Kandivali in the north. The Coastal Road is projected to be used by 1,30,000 vehicles daily and is expected to cut down the travel time between South Mumbai and the Western Suburbs from 2 hours to 40 minutes.
