The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)’s standing committee on Monday, February 8, approved a proposal of setting up a hybrid power plant at the middle of the Vaitarna dam. With this, BMC becomes the first ever civic body in the nation to take up a power project for its citizens.

While the hydroelectric power plant, which has been long in planning, will have a capacity of 20-megawatt, the floating solar photovoltaic power plant can generate as much as 80 MW, said BMC officials. Moreover, of the total 100 MW, the civic body has planned to augment the power supply in its offices.

A proposal of appointing a joint venture between Shapoorji Pallonji and Company and Mahalaxmi Konal Urja was passed to set up the hybrid solar power plant. The civic body has signed an agreement with these companies to buy electricity at the rate of INR 4.75 per unit for the next 25 years. The BMC will not have to spend money on setting up these solar plants as the company finalised will bear the cost and then sell the electricity.

The hydro and solar plants will generate about 208 million units of energy per year and is likely to save BMC’s INR 24 crores on electricity bills every year.

The power generated from this project will be supplied to the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) grid. In return, the amount will be adjusted in the overall electricity bill. The project will take 31 months to complete, that is by 2023.
