The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is planning changes in the western suburban roads to reduce traffic congestion in the north phase of the Mumbai Coastal Road Project between Versova and Dahisar. The civic body has proposed many new road links and flyover connections to improve movement on the coastal road.
The coastal road is being built as an alternative north-south corridor to reduce pressure on the Western Express Highway, SV Road and Link Road. While the main stretch is expected to provide signal-free travel, reports suggest that jams are forming near entry and exit points because vehicles from several feeder roads merge at limited access locations.
The coastal road follows a linear development model where traffic enters and exits through fixed points. This causes heavy crowding around junctions connected to the corridor. This also affects the carrying capacity of surrounding roads. To address this, the BMC plans to distribute traffic movement instead of forcing all vehicles through a single entry or exit.
The proposed road connections include:
1. Realignment work near the JVPD flyover to improve access towards the coastal corridor.
2. A flyover near the local self-government office that will connect with the Versova Link Road. This route will further connect with the Versova-Bandra Sea Link connector and the coastal road.
3. A direct route for commuters travelling from Gokhale Bridge towards the CD Barfiwala flyover, where the JVPD flyover is planned to begin.
4. Connectivity from the Versova end of the Versova-Bandra Sea Link towards the Western Express Highway. The project is currently underway.
5. A future connection between the coastal road near Madh junction in Lokhandwala and the proposed Versova-Madh bridge.
6. Access towards the Western Express Highway through the expanded corridor being developed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority towards the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road.
7. A proposed link between the future Ramchandra Nullah bridge in Malad and the coastal road near the Mindspace junction.
8. A connection between the Lokhandwala interchange on the coastal road and one arm of the Mrunaltai Gore flyover leading towards the Western Express Highway.
9. Additional links proposed at the Charkop interchange in Sector 8.
10. Proposed connections towards Link Road at the Gorai interchange, the Dahisar connector, the Kandarpada rotary and SV Road near the Poisar junction.
11. A new 5.5-kilometre high-speed corridor between Magathane and Goregaon is in plans. The road will run parallel to the Western Express Highway and will provide direct access to the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road twin tunnels.
While some sections of the coastal road corridor have already undergone changes, other connecting routes are being developed separately. As per reports, all these projects are currently in different stages of planning and implementation.
