Recently, BMC issued new ‘Hoarding Policy Guidelines,’ which states that the digital billboards can be installed in malls, multiplexes, shopping complexes, commercial buildings, petrol pumps and other display boards. The new policy was introduced after the previous policy ended in January 2018.

The High Court issued an order regarding this and the government has also given a directive with similar instructions. The new policy prevents the political parties from hoarding in places such as Collector Office, MHADA, PWD, Airports and BEST ventures. However, hoarding will be allowed during the elections.

Further, it also bans the hoardings on the rooftops or terraces. However, the new policy allowed graffiti and wall paintings on dead walls.

Also, the governing body has offered 10 per cent discount to digital hoardings that will install CCTV cameras and provide the Disaster Control Room with the live feed. Digital hoardings running on solar power will also get 10 percent discount during the first year.

Permission to install digital hoardings will be provided by the Mumbai Traffic police. Even existing hoardings can be converted into digital or LED, but permission from the traffic department is a must.
