BMC Budget 2022: Whopping ₹3200 Cr allocated for Mumbai Coastal Road Project

A total of INR 22,647 crores has been allocated for capital expenditure for spending on projects dealing with infrastructure, drainage systems and water supply.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal presented a budget of INR 45,949 crores, up around 17 per cent from the 2021-22 budget of INR 39,038 crores.

While capital expenditure constitutes 49 per cent of the total budget, revenue expenditure is about 51 per cent of the total allocation.

The civic body has focused on various aspects including health, infrastructure and education.

Here are the highlights from the BMC Budget Session:

  • A total of ₹3200 crores for Mumbai Coastal Road Project, one of the prestigious projects undertaken by BMC. Meanwhile, the base construction cost of Coastal Road Project is ₹8,429.44 crores and the total cost inclusive of taxes, supervision charges, consultancy charges and others is ₹12,950 crores. All works of package I, II, IV have commenced and till date 50% progress is achieved. In Package-IV, the boring of first tunnel of 2072 meters from Priyadarshini Park to Girgaon Chowpaty has been completed.
  • The Goregaon - Mulund link road is being implemented in four phases for which ₹1,300 crores has been allocated. In first Phase, 50% work of approach Roads for Nahur ROB (Excluding Railway span) is completed for the Goregaon Mulund Link Road project.
  • To assist BEST, ₹800 crores has been allocated keeping in mind public transportation needs.
  • A budget provision of ₹71 crores is proposed in 2022-23 for structural repairs of above reservoirs.
  • A budget provision of ₹467 crores is proposed for four Water Conveyance Tunnel works - Amar Mahal (Chembur) to Wadala and further up to Parel (9.70 Km), Amar Mahal (Chembur) to Trombay Reservoir (5.5Km), Powai to Ghatkopar and Balkum to Mulund.
  • To upgrade the infrastructure and capability of fire brigade, provision of ₹300 crores is proposed for Plant and Machinery and ₹65.54 crores for construction of fire stations
  • A budget provision of ₹147.36 crores for development and maintenance of Gardens / Open Spaces
  • BMC is also planning to build a network of 100 EV charging stations across Mumbai. BMC to allow private & govt companies to install Public Electric Vehicle Charging Station in BMC’s public parking spaces. LOI to set up PEVCS at 12 such spaces have been issued
  • Work on 266 toilet blocks having 6635 seats, is in progress and is expected to be completed by April 2022 to improve sanitation amid ongoing pandemic
