On Thursday, February 3, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) chief Iqbal Singh Chahal declared the BMC Budget for the 2022-23 financial year.

On the education front, during his speech, he said, “We want to focus on the younger generation and give the best to them to prepare themselves for the future and hence the budget outlay for Education has been increased tremendously this year.”

The budget estimates for 2022-23 in the primary education expenditure is INR 2361.89 cr which is a 5 per cent share in the rupee.

Here are some highlights of the education aspect of the BMC budget 2022-23:

  • An amount of INR 4840.61 crore on account of grant-in-aid from the Education department of the State Government has been set aside.

In the academic year 2021-22:

  • BMC has commenced 10 CBSE board schools from Nursery to grade 6.
  • 24 new secondary schools have been started by the civic authority.
  • Balwadi students will have access to the online curriculum (content) from the academic year 2021-22 to 2023-24.
  • Under the CSR of ‘Antarang Foundation’, a career counselling program has been commenced from March 2021. Nearly 11,433 students of grade 9 and 9,800 students of grade 10 are beneficiaries of it.
  • Proposal to digitize 1300 classrooms in the academic year 2022-23.
  • 112 computer labs will be upgraded in the academic year 2021-22.
  • E-Library will be commenced in 50 primary schools as a pilot project.
  • 103 works of repair and upgrading of school buildings are in the works.
  • INR 5 crores for IGCSE, Cambridge and IB Schools has been provided in this budget.
  • In the academic year 2022-23, one school of I.G.C.S.E and one school of I.B. will be started.
  • Skill Development Laboratory will be set up in seven schools to give students computerised training for skill development for online business, Retail E-Store, Media and Entertainment, Coding Languages. Budget Provision (Primary): INR 1.40 crore
  • Proposal to construct well-equipped Sports Complex at prime location of Mumbai region with advanced sports equipment for indoor and outdoor sports and inclusive of all facilities. Budget Provision (Primary): INR 50 lakh
  • 25 well equipped astronomical laboratories will be set up in BMC schools as a pilot project. Budget Provision (Primary): INR 75 lakh

In an attempt to ensure quality education to the locals, BMC’s Budget Estimates (Primary) for the year 2022-23 is INR 3370.24 crore. While the Revenue Budget: INR 2870.24 crores, the Capital Budget: INR 500 crores.
