A proposal to create two wards by dividing Mumbai's Andheri and Kurla area has been put forward in the recently held Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) meeting which was attended by several ministers from the government. As per reports, if the proposal is approved, Mumbai would have two additional wards which will increase the count from 24 to 26.

It is being said that the proposal was made by the officials from municipal administration since both the wards Andheri East (Ward K-East) and Kurla (Ward-L) are very large in geography. Furthermore, this is causing inconvenience for administrative work, and considering several other aspects, the civic body has proposed to divide these two wards. Officials have informed that having a small ward can be useful for administrative convenience and other public works. Once approved, the decision will benefit several works conducted by the BMC.

Meanwhile, the corporation had earlier appointed a committee to divide the two wards. BMC's Joint Commissioner Sunil Dhamne and Bharat Marathe's committee had studied and submitted the report regarding the same. The report mentioned issues related to the population in the ward, facilities, stress on the administration, inconvenience to the citizens and hence recommended the division of wards K-East and L.

The proposal was hence present in a meeting, in the presence of leaders, to understand their thoughts on the same. Ward-L (Kurla) is considered to be one of the largest wards in the city and  total of 16 corporators are a part of this ward. Moreover, over nine lakh people from Mumbai live in this ward. Hence, it is being considered that ward L-South and L-North will be divided into two wards. One of the ward buildings will be located near Kurla West Depot.

Besides this, a proposal has been made to build a new ward office at Chandivali. Therefore, citizens of Chandivali and surrounding areas will not have to come to Kurla for administrative work.

On the other hand, officials from the BMC have also proposed to divide wards K-East into K-South and K-North. At present, K-East has 15 corporators and over 8.23 lakh people from Mumbai live in K East. So, it has been recommended to make P North (Malad) ward as Malad East, P East and Malad West as P West.

The division of wards will be discussed and the decision will be taken soon in the upcoming meetings., post which, the civic body decided to present the proposal in the general body meeting. Once all th leaders agree to the same, two new wards will be announced in Mumbai.
