The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Sunday, November 29, announced that the civic marshals will be handing out free masks while collecting a fine of ₹200, who will be found without masks at public places.

In a bid to control the coronavirus surge, the BMC has taken this initiative to create awareness among violators about the importance of masks. It has been observed that those caught without mask would pay penalty and continue to repeat the same mistake, said an official.

The BMC official said that the purpose of making them wear is defeated as there are some people who keep it in the pocket or bag but make excuses like forgot to wear. Whereas, there are many who don’t carry the masks at all. Hence, this step is to educate the people regarding the importance of wearing a mask.

Since September, the BMC had reduced the fine for not wearing a mask from the initial ₹1,000 to ₹200 as more people had started to come out on roads due to unlocking. Anticipating a spike in COVID-19 cases following the festive season, it has now increased inspection drives across the city.

According to the data by BMC, it has collected around ₹10.07 crores as fines by penalising nearly 4.85 violators until November 28.
