Illegal constructions have always been a cause of nuisance for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and over the years, the civic body has taken necessary steps to clear out the encroachers from the disputed land to make way for developmental projects. In a similar incident, BMC took action against 70 illegal constructions in a two-day demolition drive on Thursday.

The Municipal Corporation brought down 70 illegal constructions in P South area near the nullah in Naya Nagar, Goregaon West, on Thursday. The constructions were demolished to make way for a wider nullah in the area.

The widening of the nullah in Naya Nagar had been pending for the last four years due to illegal constructions near the drain. However, as the BMC has raxed down the illegal buildings, now the civic body can go ahead with the planned nullah widening by up to 3 metres. The widening of nullah will assist the BMC in the cleaning of the nullah in an easier manner.

The entire drive by BMC was conducted over the course of two days, i.e. on Wednesday and Thursday, in Goregaon West. The entire project to remove the illegal encroachers was conducted in the presence of 50 civic employees and 30 policemen were deployed to avoid any eventuality. Two JCB machines, two dumpers, a gas cutter and other equipment were used in this service.
