Coronavirus cases in Mumbai are increasing with every passing day, and despite the strict norms issued by the government, several citizens have been found flouting the rules. To ensure safety, officials have asked people to maintain social distancing, hygiene and also wear masks when in public.

However, observing the irresponsible behaviour, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has taken action against such people and imposed fines. With an aim to address the issues, Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal has asked authorities to issue strict instructions and take action against 20,000 unmasked citizens in Mumbai every day.

The operation to resolve the same started on Monday, October 13, 2020, across all areas in Mumbai. On the very first day, a total of 4,300 people were arrested for not wearing masks, and as per guidelines, fine of INR 200 was imposed, post which a sum of INR 8.60 lakh has been collected by the officials.

As per official records, BMC, from April 2020, has collected a fine of over INR 1.5 crores from citizens who failed to wear masks, and more than 38,000 people have been fined during this period. A special team of 980 officers has been formed by the municipal corporation for the same, and they travel across Mumbai to find irresponsible people.

Sharing more information, IS Chahal said the campaign would last for a month and the team will review the situation on a daily basis. A massive campaign has been launched in Mumbai to punish around 20,000 citizens who do not wear masks every day, and this is aimed at making people responsible during these tough times when the cases are increasing across several wards in the city.
