Certain regions from Mumbai that include the likes of Byculla, Dadar, DharaviGoregaon, Mulund and Parel have registered a rise in drinking water contamination in the past year, highlighted statistics from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) yearly Environment Status Report (ESR), 2020-21, mentioned a report by the Indian Express.

From the 29,051 samples of water checked by the BMC, 0.94% or 275 were found to be contaminated.

On Thursday, the ESR of 2020-21 was distributed to the corporators. It depicted that the largest water contamination samples were from wards such as the G-North (Dadar, Dharavi) wherein 3.4% of the aggregate samples were contaminated, this was trailed by P-South (Goregaon) at 2.4%, T (Mulund) at 2.3% and F-north (Sion, Matunga) at 2.2%.

In contrast to last year, contamination at G-north was at 1.15%, F-north was at 0.1%. P-south and T were at 1.3% and 0.2% respectively. Officials elucidated that from the aggregate water samples collected, 275 highlighted E-coli bacteria that can result in diarrhoea and dysentery.

At the BMC’s laboratory in Dadar, sample testing was undertaken. Officials believe, according to the report, that the contamination could be a result of old or damaged water supply pipelines. An official from the hydraulic engineer department stated that since the past five years, old and eroded pipelines through the city have been replaced, but some are left. They see to it that water from the reservoirs is pure, so the contamination could be bought whilst the transmission process was on. From random places, 200-250 samples were collected, mentioned the official based on the report.

Every day the civic authority supplies 3,850 million litres of water. 27 service reservoirs supply water to housing societies, commercial buildings and slums. According to the report, the island city has over 4 lakh metered water connections.

The BMC, this March achieved the Jal Nirmalata Award for 2019-20 from the Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs for water purity standards. The BMC is also building two water tunnels to hinder water contamination.
