The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)-run KEM Hospital in mumbai is planning to add 300 beds by the end of September, bringing the total to almost 2,500 beds. The hospital currently has 2,250 beds. As per reports, the hospital has seen an increasing demand.
In 2023, KEM Hospital admitted 64,520 patients, averaging 177 patients each day. The outpatient department recorded 17,92,183 visits from new and returning patients last year.
The hospital also faced challenges last year, when four medical wards and two general surgery wards had to close due to severe structural damage. Patients were treated in temporary wards at Sewri TB Hospital. This led to concerns in the hospital's resources and staff.
After more than 14 months of repairs, wards 4, 7, and 11 have now reopened, allowing normal operations to resume in those areas. Renovation work on wards 4A, 8, and 12 is also nearing completion. The hospital’s historic architecture made the restoration work challenging, but progress has been made.
The addition of 300 beds will improve KEM Hospital’s ability to care for its large patient base. The capacity of the newly renovated wards has increased from handling 60–75 patients to accommodating 90–100 patients.
