On Friday, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) decision of handing over the garbage collection and taking it to the dumping ground to private contractors has not gone down well with safai workers. Post the civic body's decision, these workers had announced that they would not pick up waste in the city and on Friday, November 16, safai workers both permanent employees and contract workers did not collect waste. Due to this decision, heaps of garbage was seen lying unattended in all 24 municipal wards.

On Wednesday, the BMC handed over the garbage collection and segregation work to private contractors. Due to this, safai workers, who are associated with the civic body, are losing out on their jobs while many of the workers have been absorbed in another department.
