On July 8, Monday, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) turned down the proposal to introduce water sports at Powai Lake. The proposal consisted of the introduction of sports like scuba diving, water aerobics, water polo, and boat racing at the lake.

The civic body had reportedly shot down the proposal since the lake has crocodiles and introducing water sports in the lake could threaten the visitors.

The proposal was introduced by Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) corporator Saeeda Khan in July 2018. Accordingly, now the rejected proposal will be tabled in BMC's Standing Committee meeting on Wednesday, July 10, after which it will be put up for discussion.

Meanwhile, Khan stated that she was sad that BMC couldn't understand the idea behind her proposal. She added that bringing water sports could help BMC generate a lot of revenue.

On the other hand, BMC said that it was working on several plans to restore the lake from pollutants. The civic body also stated that they are working towards preserving the lake since it has rich marine biodiversity and is home to rare species of crocodiles
