This week, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) gave the final draft of the updated electoral ward boundaries of the 227 electoral wards to the State Election Commission (SEC), highlighted reports. Officials from the civic authority’s election department stated that they had finished the rectification of the boundaries of the constituencies and nearly 20 per cent of the boundaries have been updated.

Based on accounts, updates were undertaken according to the removal and adding of voters in the respective constituencies. Whilst the rectification has been completed, delimitation of the constituencies hasn’t been undertaken. Upon receiving the green signal from the SEC, the BMC will attain the citizen’s recommendations and objections to the draft. Since alterations have been made in 25 per cent of the ward boundaries, nearly 60 ward’s boundaries have been changed.

The SEC in August had instructed the municipal bodies to commence the delimitation of the ward boundaries. Adding that the draft reports need to be sent promptly.

Officials believe that delimitation is generally undertaken according to new census data, elaborating that only if there are over 10 per cent alterations in the population in a constituency the activity is done.

Suresh Kakani, the additional municipal commissioner stated that the recommendations and objections will be sought after post the SECs instructions.

If accounts are to be believed, the BMC for the elections slated to be held in February next year has included nearly 4,000 polling booths which compared to now are 7,900. With this, each poll will cater to only 800 voters keeping in mind the COVID-19 precautions.

Political parties such as Congress and Shiv Sena want the ward boundaries to be rectified, claiming that they were in favour of the BJP in 2017. The delimitation process is undertaken to ensure that the voter population is balanced across the wards.
