On Wednesday, as part of the forthcoming elections for 18 municipal corporations which include the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the state election commission (SEC) proclaimed a notification asking the corporations to commence the delimitation process, cites reports. The delimitation process includes the redrawing of electoral ward boundaries, the process of which can start from August 27, according to the order made by the commission.

Since there are 18 corporations in Maharashtra whose term lapse in early 2022, elections need to be conducted before that. Considering that the BMC’s elected body term ends on March 7, 2022, it is proposed that elections for the same be held near February next year. Apart from Mumbai’s BMC, other corporations’ terms that will also end early next year include Nagpur, Nashik, Pune and Thane.

The corporations have been asked by the commission to make use of the 2011 census data to partake in the delimitation process. Based on the report by the Times of India, additional factors that they also need to consider include alterations in geography, increase and or decrease of voters, building redevelopments and infrastructure projects.

The upcoming BMC Elections have been the talk of the town in Mumbai, with Narayan Rane being arrested and then granted bail in the wee hours of the night for the derogatory remarks made by him against Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray when he was in the state for the Jan Aashirwad Yatra.
