NGO Praja released a report called, Status of Civic Issues in Mumbai in June 2021 via Right to Information (RTI). According to the data in this report, BMC, in 2020 took approximately two months to solve complaints related to the roads. When this figure is compared to that of 2019, the number was at 31 days. Additionally, the percentage of complaints closed was 67% in 2020, in contrast to 95% in 2019.

The information further elaborates that whilst the number of these road linked complaints were 15,239 in 2019, it stood at 6,908 in 2020.

This data is brought to light in the backdrop of a response from an RTI application filed by Ameet Satam, Andheri MLA, showing that the BMC spent Rs 21,000 crores on repairs, maintenance and building new roads since 1997.

This scenario has gained mixed responses from the public, on one hand, according to reports, some blame the people themselves as they aren’t diligently following up with the authorities about their road allied issues. They thus believe the authorities take advantage of the same.

The NGO’s trustee, in some narratives, highlights how in 2020, the city was battling the coronavirus and was thus at home. The trustee elaborated on how the authorities are constantly pointing fingers at each other.

Ameet Satam too, elucidated the recurrent debate each year on potholes and spoke about how even after paying taxes, people aren’t being offered good roads, claim reports.

Potholes have been the city’s bone of contention for many years, especially during monsoons. For instance, a road scam in 2015 raised eyebrows on the body’s expenditure activities.
