Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP), Borivali is now implementing a Wildlife Adoption Scheme. Wildlife enthusiasts, organizations and companies are urged to adopt animals and participate in wildlife management. The stipulated adoption amount is for a year.

Many captive wild animals such as the lion, tiger, leopard and many more are taken care of in the National Park. The adoption of these animals will give everyone the opportunity to participate in the stupendous work of forest and wildlife conservation.

The amount for the adoption of these animals includes Rs 3 lakh 10 thousand for a tiger, Rs 3 lakh for a lion, Rs 1 lakh 20 thousand for a leopard, Rs 50,000 for a rusty-spotted cat, Rs 30,000 for a nilgai, Rs 20,000 for a deer, and Rs 10,000 for an Indian muntjac.

Under this scheme last year, only 16 animals were adopted. The total cost was Rs 16.6 lakh. According to reports, officials state that lions and tigers are special attractions for tourists in the SGNP. These wild cats were brought from various places that include Bannerghatta Biological Park, Karnataka and Pench National Park, Madhya Pradesh.

Officials also state that the leopards detained at SGNP were caught between 2003 and 2005 in and around Mumbai. They have been confined due to old age or injuries.
