The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to use e-auto rickshaws for collecting garbage in congested areas of Mumbai. The new plan will cover the narrow streets of Dharavi, Fort, and Colaba. The project is expected to begin next month if everything goes smoothly.
BMC will rent six e-auto rickshaws for this project. The rental period will be six months. Three vehicles will be sent to the A Ward. This ward includes Fort and Colaba. The remaining three will be used in the G North Ward. This ward includes Dharavi, Mahim, and Dadar East.
These electric vehicles will collect garbage from narrow roads. At present, garbage is collected only from main roads. Workers had to carry the waste from small lanes to the main road. Now, the e-autos will directly enter those lanes. This will reduce manual work.
Each e-auto will have a capacity between 350 and 500 kilograms. They will run in two shifts. The first shift will be from 6:30 am to 2:30 pm. The second shift will be from 2:30 pm to 8:30 pm.
As per reports, around 10,000 to 20,000 people in Colaba and Fort will be helped. In Dharavi, nearly 40,000 to 50,000 people will benefit from the new waste collection plan.
Currently, BMC uses mini tempos to collect garbage from narrow streets. These tempos can carry 1.5 tonnes of waste. But they still struggle to move through tight lanes. Officials said that even though they are smaller than trucks, the tempos create traffic jams in narrow areas.
The civic body is now promoting electric vehicles. This follows the state government's policy. Officials said the final cost of the project is not fixed yet. Tenders will be invited for operations based on shifts. BMC has also decided to clean the roads twice daily. Cleaning will take place in the morning and again in the evening.
