Along the lines of Indian Premier League (IPL) tournaments, the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has planned to conduct water polo competitions. 

Under the guidance of experts and civic officials, the civic body has already commenced a preparatory work study. If all goes as planned, the water polo competition might begin in Dec 2023 or Jan 2024.

Currently, the BMC looks after four swimming pools at Dadar, Chembur, Kandivali and Dahisar (East), respectively. Along with this, at Dahisar (West), Malad (West), Andheri (West), Andheri (East), Worli and Vikhroli, new swimming pools are being constructed which are in the final stage.

BMC Deputy Commissioner Kishore Gandhi told the Free Press Journal that the project is at a very initial stage. The civic body has planned to conduct competitions at different swimming pools in Mumbai, he added. He further said that a consultant will be appointed and a private partner for the project and will also try to get sponsorships for the games.

At its four swimming pools, the civic body introduced online membership a few months back. In the first phase, around 6000 people were offered membership at affordable rates. Looking at the positive response, the BMC is now planning to build one swimming pool in each administrative ward.
