Soon, Mumbaikars will not have to smell the unbearable stench of garbage along with the unpleasant view of the same, as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will be inaugurating the first organic waste converter (OWC) next week.

After the first successful trial run, the OWC has been installed at Krantisingh Nana Patil (KNP) vegetable market, Dadar (West). It is believed that these waste converters will also help in reducing the load on the city’s dumping grounds.

The BMC has plans to install 20 OWCs at its 71 civic markets which will convert wet waste into compost through the natural process. According to the sources, Yuva Sena Chief Aditya Thackeray is likely to inaugurate the machine.

Along with the KNP vegetable market, three additional machines will be installed at Maasaheb Meenatai flower market at Dadar (West), Sainath Market at Malad (West), and Borivali market, Borivali (West) by the end of this year. The estimated cost of the machine is worth ₹8.75 crore. Currently, these four markets generate 27.5 metric tonnes of wet waste.

Sangeeta Hasnale, Assistant Commissioner, Markets, said that the contractor appointed will be collecting the garbage and dumping it in the OWC which will be provided by the BMC.

Under tender two, the other 16 machines will be installed for 67 markets. More tenders will be invited again soon.
