The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has asked its ward officers from each of the 24 civic zones to submit “innovative” proposals for the upgrade of existing infrastructure as well as the construction of roads, pavements, footpaths, and so on. The caveat here is that the BMC is asking ward officers to come up with an idea that costs no more than Rs 5 crore.

This can likely be explained by the fact that the BMC has not seen an increase in tax revenue last year, with the 2020-21 budget allocation expected to remain nearly identical as last fiscal year’s budget of Rs 30,692 crore.

If the proposal is selected, the BMC says that it will be included in the 2020-21 BMC budget which will be tabled on the 4th of February. Ward officers have taken up the initiative to come up with new and exciting ideas, including converting a ward building into a “green” complex by using solar lights, composting pits, and so on.

One of the biggest challenges for the BMC will be to make sure these proposals are not waiting on tables. In the past, we’ve seen multiple ambitious proposals being approved while work on some of them is yet to commence.

In the meanwhile, citizens can reach out to their respective ward officers and pass on suggestions about necessary infrastructure work in their area.
