After the privatisation of housekeeping departments of its hospital, schools and buildings, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to appoint a private agency to clean cremation grounds in the city. The civic body declared that the agency will be responsible for the upkeep of the cremation grounds, however, it will not recruit workers for the job but pitch to the private companies directly for the same.
KHFM Hospitality Facility Management has been hired to look after each of the four zones the city is divided into. The company will be responsible for the housekeeping of 46 cremation grounds. Over the year, ₹13 crores will be spent on sanitation work.

BMC also conducted a test over 1388 workers for the recruitment which also included workers currently employed in cleaning cremation grounds.

Number of cremation grounds in western suburbs: 23
Number of cremation grounds in eastern suburbs: 15
