In recent developments, Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is reportedly to spend INR 132 crores to clean up major nullahs across the city which includes the Mithi river.

This decision has been taken keeping in view the issue of waterlogging during the monsoons. Moreover, the civic body is planning to allocate the work to seven contractors who have agreed to take up the work at 13-25 per cent below the project’s estimated cost.

According to reports, while the cleaning of major nullahs will cost INR 70 crores, desilting of the 21.05-km Mithi River, which starts from Vihar Lake and flows into the Arabian Sea at Mahim Creek, will require INR 62 crores over two years.

The civic body appoints contractors every year to desilt nullahs before the monsoon in order to avoid waterlogging. However, according to sources, the widening and deepening work on the Mithi river is 95 per cent complete. Moreover, the retaining wall of the Mithi river is 80 per cent complete due to which the carrying capacity has doubled.

In addition, tenders have been invited for Dahisar, Poisar and Oshiwara rivers. Along with the Mithi river work, tourism and artificial lake work are yet to be completed. A consultant will be appointed for this and a provision of INR 50 crores has been made for the same.

On the other hand, back on November 25, the BMC standing committee cleared four proposals pertaining to the project. As per the proposals, the sewer lines will be placed along the river to make sure the sewage doesn’t get into the water. Furthermore, the flow will be controlled via the deepening and widening of the river while the authorities will also construct a concrete protection wall and a service road.
