Mithi river work 95 per cent complete

Ahead of the monsoons in Mumbai, the widening and deepening work on the Mithi river is reportedly 95 per cent complete.

According to sources, before the monsoons hit across the city of Mumbai, work is being expedited to prevent floods and waterlogging in the city which happens to be a common occurrence. 

In view of the situation, the widening and deepening work on the Mithi river is 95 per cent complete. Moreover, the retaining wall of the Mithi river is 80 per cent complete due to which the carrying capacity has doubled.  

The Mithi river development and pollution control plan have been prepared and it will be implemented in phases:

Phase I: Construction of Filter Pada at Powai, Laying of Sewerage Ducts, Construction of Service Road, Construction of Sewage Treatment Plant with a capacity of 8 million litres per day.

Phase II: Work order of INR 570 crores has been given for laying out the protective wall, service road, sewerage at Kurla including Powai.

Phase III: INR 1,875 crores has been allocated for the developmental work like retaining wall, service road, sewerage, bridge. These four works include tunnel work from Bapat Nala to Safed Pool Nala to Ghatkopar Sewage Treatment Plant at a cost of INR 270 crores. Moreover, INR 347 crores have been provided in the budget for the same.

In addition, tenders have been invited for Dahisar, Poisar and Oshiwara rivers. Along with the Mithi river work, tourism and artificial lake work are yet to be completed. A consultant will be appointed for this and a provision of INR 50 crores has been made for the same.
