After sterilising stray dogs, now the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is planning to bring stray cats and sterilise them to control the growing population of stray cats in Mumbai. The civic body will now appoint an agency to carry out the task for them.

In June, as BMC realised that the number of cats on the streets had increased exponentially, it had asked the Animal Welfare Board of India's (AWBI) permission to use birth control measures on stray cats under Animal Birth Control (ABC) program and recently received it.

Accordingly, BMC will now appoint an agency as it has received the permission and the program may begin April 1, 2019 onwards. While no data has been available on the stray cats, BMC is said to spend around ₹1 crore to carry out the sterilisation.

Meanwhile, the sterilisation will be carried out under the ABC program and will be monitored by the BMC appointed agency.
