The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to take modern equipment for removing silt from Mithi river, which would require the civic body to spend ₹50 crores. The municipality has already spent crores of rupees over cleaning in the Mithi river.

Earlier, the BMC’s ‘Mithi River Rejuvenation’ plan to clean the Mithi River was to be undertaken at a cost of ₹569.52 crores. Under this plan, officials would conduct deepening and widening works at the river.

A state-of-the-art silt pusher and the trucker machine will now be procured to remove the sludge. This silt pusher machine removes floating debris and fallen leaves into the river. However, on that basis, the question has arisen as to whether the silt at the bottom of the river will be removed.

Based on this device, silt will be collected on the banks of the river and then it will have to be lifted with the help of pusher. The civic body has undertaken the work of cleaning Mithi river from 2016-17.

On November 25, the BMC standing committee cleared four proposals pertaining to the project. As per the proposals, the sewer lines will be placed along the river to make sure the sewage doesn’t get into the water. Further, the flow will be controlled via the deepening and widening of the river while the authorities will also construct a concrete protection wall and a service road.
