The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Thursday was directed by the Bombay High Court on Thursday to provide a representation for a new Muslim cemetery within two weeks.

The court cited a shortage of space in the existing cemeteries for the burial of the dead given the increasing number of coronavirus related deaths, particularly in regions like Chembur, Govandi, Oshiwara, and Wadala.

Meanwhile, the High Court dismissed the public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Samsher Shaikh and two residents of Govandi after their counsel Altaf Khan urged the court to reconsider their May 6 submission seeking urgent intervention to secure more space for deceased members of the community amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

The HC added that the BMC ought to provide a valid reason if the petitioners’ plea for an additional cemetery is declined. The PIL had stated that the civic body has a duty to address the citizens’ grievances in such difficult times.
