HC raps BMC for failing to handle hawkers issue

Most of Mumbai’s footpaths have been encroached upon by hawkers. The Mumbai High Court has now pulled up the BMC for failing to keep the hawkers at bay and has asked for an explanation.

The Mumbai Hawkers Union had filed a petition against the BMC which had demolished the hand carts belonging to hawkers outside the Mumbadevi temple in south Mumbai. The petitioners said that the BMC had no right to declare any area as a no-hawkers zone without the town vending committee's permission. They have also termed the BMC's move as illegal.
