On Wednesday, December 8, Chief of Defence Staff Gen Bipin Rawat, his wife Mrs Madhulika Rawat and 11 other people on board an IAF Mi 17 V5 helicopter succumbed in an unfortunate accident, mentioned the Indian Air Force on Twitter.
With deep regret, it has now been ascertained that Gen Bipin Rawat, Mrs Madhulika Rawat and 11 other persons on board have died in the unfortunate accident.

Gen Bipin Rawat was on a visit to Defence Services Staff College, Wellington to interact with the faculty and student officers of the Staff Course on Wednesday stated accounts.
Unfortunately, around noon on Wednesday, an IAF Mi 17 V5 helicopter with four members of crew carrying the Gen Bipin Rawat and nine other passengers met with an accident near Coonoor, Tamil Nadu.
Of the 14 people on board, 13 lost their lives. Gp Capt Varun Singh SC, Directing Staff at DSSC with injuries is presently under treatment at the Military Hospital, Wellington, highlighted reports.
According to the news agency, ANI, the mortal remains of those who succumbed in the chopper crash are anticipated to arrive in Delhi by Thursday, December 9, evening.
Following this news, Prime Minister, Narendra Modi took to Twitter to offer his condolences. He mentioned, “I am deeply anguished by the helicopter crash in Tamil Nadu in which we have lost Gen Bipin Rawat, his wife and other personnel of the Armed Forces. They served India with utmost diligence. My thoughts are with the bereaved families.”
