The central government has taken an important decision for the onion farmers who are protesting against the 40 percent export duty on onions. The Center started procuring onions from growers who were protesting against the 40 per cent export duty on onions grown largely in Maharashtra.


Revenue Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil has thanked the Central Government for the decision of the Central Government to buy two lakh tonnes of onion at the rate of INR 2410 per quintal and the decision of the State Government to start onion purchase centres in the city.

Regarding the decision taken by the Central Government, Minister Vikhe Patil said that whenever there is a problem before the farmers of the State, the Central Government stands firmly with the State and extends a helping hand. Keeping in view the situation that has arisen in the last two days in the case of onions, the decision taken by the Central Government for the first time in this regard is important and a relief for the onion producing farmers.


Central government had imposed 40 percent fee

The Modi government had imposed a 40 per cent duty two days ago to discourage onion exports and ensure cheap supplies in the inflation-hit domestic market. This fee will be effective till December 2023. This angered market traders, including traders whose containers were parked at ports.
