As per reports, the Central Railway (CR) has completed the installation of automated gates at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT). Both the Central Railways and the Western Railways plans to install these gates for suburban commuters as well.

Moreover, a total of five QR code-based automated flap-enabled entry points have been provided. The passengers are to sign the QR codes on their tickets. If the ticket is legitimate, then the gates will open.

The QR code system has been installed to avoid overcrowding at the stations. The project will be implemented on a pilot basis, at Mumbai’s Churchgate after Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT). The new system will work similar to the current entrance gates installed at all metro stations in the city, and it is expected that this move will control crowding. As per reports, the QR-based gate was inspected on August 11, 2020, at the railway stations on the Western Railway with the help of a private company.

In a similar instance, the BEST had also adopted the QR code system amidst the pandemic. At least 8,500 passengers have issued tickets using the QR codes. Meanwhile, the QR code was facilitated by the BEST administration since the month of July in a bid to fight the contagious disease. At that time, the administration expected a good response from the passengers, however, this prediction of the initiative turned out to be false as it received a mildew response.
