With several citizens not abiding by the rules and failing to wear a face mask in public, in recent developments, the Western and Central Railways have cracked down on 243 people and collected fines of INR 50,000 from them.

According to reports, several municipal employees and GRP squads are taking action in these railway stations. Several people were seen walking around without masks. As a result, last week, the Railways had issued a circular and decided to take stern action against those who spit at the railway stations and do not wear masks. Sources say that the authorities are to collect a fine of INR 500 from the citizens flouting the COVID-19 norms in these stations.

Moreover, in the last four days, Central Railways has taken action against 114 people and collected a fine of INR 16,700 from them, while Western Railway took action against 90 people on April 19 and 94 persons on April 20 and recovered a fine of INR 33,000 from them.

In the past, the Mumbai Commissioner of Police had informed that the Mumbai Police are now authorized to issue challans to offenders not wearing a face mask in view of the pandemic and the rising number of COVID-19 cases. Earlier on February 20, the civic body fined a total of 16,154 people for not wearing face masks at public places in Mumbai. Moreover, INR 32,30,800 has been collected by the civic body on this single-day drive. Meanwhile, most of the people were fined at places like restaurants, theatres, gyms, and clubs.
